Luke 20 part 2

"Beware of Religious People"

The spies began to ask Jesus questions to trick him; “Master, we know that what you say and teach is true. It doesn’t matter who is listening- you teach the same to all people. The Truth about God’s Way. (boy they were laying it on thick) Tell us, is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” Jesus knew their hearts. He can’t be fooled. He said to them, “Show me a penny. Whose name and picture is on it?’ They answered, “Caesar’s” And He said, “Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God.” The spies couldn’t trap Jesus with those words. Next, some Sadducees tried to trick Jesus. Sadducees were a group of religious people who denied the supernatural things of God; like the resurrection of the dead and angels. Etc. They were wealthy, aristocratic members of the priestly tribe only accepting the Pentateuch as their authority. They went to Jesus; “Master, Moses wrote unto us, if any man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.” Remember, they didn’t believe in resurrection after death, they were just trying to trap Jesus and gave Him a scenario. “…therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? For seven brothers had her to wife.”

And Jesus answered them; “On earth, people marry. Some will be saved and resurrected to live again after death. In that life, they will not marry. They will not die. They are children of God because they have been raised from death, neither marry nor are given in marriage. God showed Himself to Moses in a bush and He is not God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto Him. Some of the scribes (teachers of the law) said, “Master, You have answered well.” And after that, none of them were brave enough to ask another question. So, then Jesus began asking them questions:

“Why do people say that the Messiah is the Son of David? (then He refers to Psalm 110:1) David calls the Messiah, ‘Lord’. So how can the Messiah also be David’s son?”

While the people were listening to Jesus, He said to His followers, “Be careful of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around wearing clothes that look important And they love for people to show them respect. They want the best of the best in everything for others to see. But they cheat and steal. They say long prayers to look important. And they will receive greater punishment because of how they treat people and disrespect God’s Word, in other words…Religious people.
