Luke 22 Part 2
"Not My Will, But Yours Be Done"
Later,
the apostles began to argue about which one of them was the most important. But
Jesus reminds us that we are to be humble. He, Himself, King of all kings, was willing
to serve all people. He told Peter that He prayed for Him because He was concerned
for Him. But Peter told Jesus that he was ready to go with Him, unto the end
and Jesus shared with Peter that He knew that Peter would deny Him three times
before the cock crows. He told the disciples that they would be persecuted for
His Name’s sake and to be prepared.
After
the meal, He went out to the Mount of Olives to pray and encouraged the disciples
to pray as well. He went to a quiet spot and began praying to The Father asking
Him to remove the cup from Him. He knew that soon His flesh would suffer excruciating
pain. But more than that, He knew The Father would not be able to look upon the
sins of the world that would be poured over Him. ‘Nevertheless, not my will,
but Thine, be done.’ And there an angel appeared unto Him, strengthening Him.
Jesus prayed, in agony, even more earnestly. When He rose from prayer, He found
the disciples sleeping. And He asked them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray.”
While He spoke, Judas and a crowd came up and Judas betrayed Jesus with a
greeting kiss. The disciples wanted to fight.
Peter even cut off the ear of one of the swordsmen. But Jesus said “Stop!” and touched
the man’s ear, healing him.
They
arrested Jesus and took Him, while Peter followed afar off. Peter sat down
among the people at the fire. A servant girl saw him sitting there and remembered
that he was a follower of Jesus. But Peter denied it. More people accused him.
But Peter denied the truth two more times. And while he was still speaking the
rooster crowed. Then Jesus turned and looked into Peter’s eyes. And Peter
remembered what Jesus had said and he left and cried bitterly. Can you imagine
that look? I would have bawled my head off also.
The
men guarding Jesus made fun of Him and beat Him. They covered His eyes so He
couldn’t see them asking Him to point out who was beating Him. They shouted all
kinds of insults at Him. The next morning, the elders and religious leaders
came together to question Jesus. “If you are the Messiah, then tell us that you
are.” Jesus said to them, “If I tell you I am the Messiah, you will not believe
me. And if I ask you, you will not answer. But beginning now the Son of Man
will sit at the right hand of God. “Jesus doesn’t deny Who He is. But this was
a conspiracy with one desired outcome- Kill Jesus! “Why do we need witnesses
now? We all heard what He said.”
