You Don't Know the Oil in my Alabaster Box
Word
was getting back to John the Baptist and so he sent two of his own disciples to
ask Jesus if was really The One? John wasn’t wavering in his faith. He knew who
Jesus was. He had baptized Him. But He was in prison and things were getting
tough and so just like us, John needed some reassurance from Jesus Christ,
Himself. The two disciples came to Jesus and asked Him if He was “HE”? Right
there in front of John’s disciples, Jesus performed many miracles. Then He answered
them “Go your way, and tell John what things you have seen and heard…”
After
they left, Jesus began speaking highly about John and what John’s purpose in
life was for; to prepare the way for Him; Jesus. It goes on for several verses.
The Lord is compassionate and understands when we struggle and need reassurances.
One
of the Pharisees wanted Jesus to go to his home and have a meal with him. This
Pharisee’s name was Simon, not to be confused with Simon Peter. While eating, a sinful woman had heard about
Jesus being there and brought an alabaster box of ointment and crashed the
dinner party. This story is similar in many ways with another event that is
described in the other gospels. But this is a totally different event. This
woman is a sinner/ a prostitute. She came up behind Jesus and began crying. As
custom was, Jesus was reclining at a low table, feet placed behind Him. She
began to wash His feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair and kissed
His feet and anointed them with the ointment. This woman’s behavior was shocking
by all accounts. Her crying was out of shame and repentance. But when the Host of
the party (Simon) saw this, he said within himself “If this man were really a
prophet, He would have known what type of sinful woman this is that is touching
him.” But Jesus heard his heart and said “Simon, I have something to say to
you.” And Jesus shares a parable about a creditor and two debtors. Then He said
“Simon, do you see this woman? I came into your house; you gave me no water to
wash my feet. But she washed my feet with her tears and wiped them with the
hairs of her head.” It was customary to give water to guests to wash their
feet. It was an insult not to do it. Jesus continued; “You gave me no kiss; but
this woman hasn’t stopped kissing me since she came in. You didn’t anoint my
head with oil; but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I tell
you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom
little is forgiven, the same loves little.” And Jesus turned to her and said, “Thy
sins are forgiven, thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.” This gives me the
holy bumps every time I read about it.
