"Treasures In Heaven"
Jesus’ Sermon
continues- Matthew 6:19-24
The amount of junk we accumulate over
the years is insane. So much so that we even acquire storage sheds to hold the
overfill. How crazy is that? Eventually, all that junk will just become a nest
for vermin to make their home. Yuck. They destroy those precious items just to
make things comfier for them. What becomes
one man’s junk can become another man’s or mouse’s treasure. Our focus can become
so distracted by worldly things that we may forget to look up at times.
Jesus tells us ‘do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths
and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.’ There is a show
called “Salvage Kings”. This group of men is paid to go into buildings and
houses to take whatever they want before the structure is demolished. They
rip out boards and fixtures, etc. But then they also rifle through all the junk
that was left behind. Things that must have been precious to their owners at one
time or another. They crawl and creep into tight spaces, in basements and
attics and closets, in hopes to find something that will bring them a profit
for all their hard work. People will
then come to their store and pay high dollar for items that just a few
days earlier were covered in filth. Why do we get so bogged down in stuff? We give children junk that will be tossed in
drawers never to play with again. And so the vicious cycle goes on. There are
many ‘things’ that rival our attention. But when we figure out what our
treasures are, Jesus says then we will know what our heart is focused on.
Jesus, as usual, has a better plan for us: “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon (money). Jesus describes the entrance into our hearts via our eyes. Be careful little eyes what you see. They can be a doorway to our souls. What we focus on. What we watch. What we read. What we peek at. The eyes can see good and evil. But allowing our eyes to peruse evil will have a dangerous outcome over our hearts. The enemy is deceptive and out to destroy our witness. These few verses cover the waste of time that we focus on junk and how we can allow that junk to clutter our hearts. Instead of putting our value into things that are of the earth, Jesus encourages us to instead focus on the Kingdom of God; heaven. Jesus then tells us we have nothing to worry about. Instead, focus on Him.
We will study that
tomorrow.
