Ask, Seek, Knock

 Ask, Seek, Knock

Matthew 7:7-12 continues with Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount.  “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks the door will be opened.” This is another misused scripture. This is not a “Name it and claim it” prayer. We don’t get what we want just because we pray for it. The Lord is not some genie in the bottle waiting for us to rub the lamp and ask for our wishes to be granted, even if we meticulously polish the lamp. He continues “Which of you, if your son would ask for bread, would you give him a stone? Of if he asked for a fish, would you give him a snake? If you, who are primarily bad, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him! So, in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Ask, Seek, Knock… verbal, focus, action. It’s purposefully allowing God to be a part of our lives in everything we do. Without Faith, it is impossible to please God. We will not always get what we ask for. That’s not what Jesus is saying. But when we Trust in Him, we will get what we need. Prayer is an open conversation and a good conversation goes back and forth. We need to listen to what He is telling us instead of talking over Him. Go to Him in prayer; Ask. Seek His Face: God is not hiding from us. He never leaves us. But we get distracted and move away from Him. So, we need to keep our eyes and hearts focused on Him. Pay attention. Seek Him in everything. We already studied seeking His Kingdom first and His righteousness. When our hearts are focused on Him, our priorities change. Our desires change. Knock- Jesus once again uses a metaphor. Knock and the door will be opened to you. We are told to pray without ceasing. Don’t give up. Keep on knocking. And Jesus finishes this portion out,  and so in EVERYTHING, do to others what you would have them do to you. Hello, Golden Rule here. Do what you would want others to do to or for you. Be Kind. Be Gentle. Be compassionate. Be giving. Be Loving and Caring.

That’s something you can name and claim in The Name of The Lord.
