A Scarlet Rope
The LORD loves a humble
heart. Our world is obsessed with what we see. We live in a shallow world. We refuse
to invest our time and our hearts into the things that truly matter, in WHO
truly matters. As I was studying this morning on yet another woman in the Bible
that the Lord used and blessed, my heart became overwhelmed with the fact that
He knows us way better than we know ourselves. Rahab; a prostitute, an outsider…a
shameful woman. Yet, because of her willing heart, she became a powerful
testimony for The Lord.
Joshua 2-6 shares with
us the story of Rahab. The Israelites were called by God to conquer the city of
Jericho. Joshua sent two spies into Jericho to case the joint per se. Word got
back to the king of Jericho that there were spies among them. So, the king
ordered them to be brought to him. Rahab, had the spies hide on her rooftop at
her place. She told them that their lives were in imminent danger. She
protected them and then helped them escape. In doing so, she asked for
protection over her own family due to the upcoming battle between their
people. The spies agreed. But she had to do a few things. She had to hang a
scarlet rope out of the window so the Israelites would know which home to
spare. How fitting. Her family needed to be inside her home during the battle and finally, she better not turn on them. The battle ensued and Rahab and her family were the
only ones left alive. Rahab later married an Israelite named Salmon from the tribe
of Judah. They had a son named Boaz, who later became the husband of Ruth. And Joseph
is her descendant all the way to Jesus. The Lord used a prostitute and she was
changed and what a transformation.
Rahab had heard about
the Israelites. Rahab had heard about their God and acknowledged His Power and
Strength. “And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt,
neither did there remain any courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD
your God, He is God in heaven above, and in the earth beneath.” – Joshua 2:11 Rahab’s
life was spared and later her soul was saved. And through her willing heart and
transformation, she was blessed to be named in the hall of faith in Hebrews
11:31. Only one other woman made the list and that was Sarah. “By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not,
when she had received the spies with peace.” Rahab became a new creature. She
was made brand new. The Grace of God in all its perfection and how beautiful
that is.
