Luke
14 part 1
"I Am A Whosoever!"
Once
again Jesus was invited to a Pharisees house to dine on a Sabbath day. Jesus ate
often with the Pharisees. But their plan was to catch Jesus breaking their laws.
While there, a very ill man came in. The Pharisees were using this sick man to get
to Jesus. Jesus turned to them and said; “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath
Day?” Jesus had asked others this question before. No one answered. So, Jesus
took the man, healed him, and let him go showing them that having mercy was important. Then Jesus noticed that some of the guests were choosing
the best places to sit. He then shared a parable; “When someone invites you to a wedding, don’t sit at the most
important seat. They may have invited someone more important than you. And you
will get embarrassed when they tell you to move to the least important seat. So,
when you are invited, go sit in the least important seat. Then what an honor
it will be when they say ‘Friend, move up here to this better seat!’ Everyone
who makes themselves important will be made humble. But everyone who makes
themselves humble will be made important. What great advice!
Jesus
turns to His host and shares how important it is to invite those in need. God rewards
a humble heart. Someone said, “Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the
Kingdom of God.” It was a common belief of the Jews to think that they would be
the only ones invited to the heavenly feast. Blows my mind but there are
actually people today who think ‘their’ denomination or church affiliation will
be the only ones at the heavenly feast. Not True! Jesus continues “A man
gave a big dinner. He invited many people. When it was time to eat, he sent his
servant to tell the guests, ‘Come. The food is ready.’ But all the guests made
excuses for why they couldn’t come. The servant returned and told his master
what had happened. The master was angry. He said, ‘Hurry! Go into the streets
and alleys of the town. Bring me the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the
lame,’ Later, the servant told him, ‘Master, I did what you told me to do, but
we still have empty seats.’ The master said to his servant, ‘Go out to the highways
and country roads. Tell the people there to come. I want my house to be full!...
