Luke 20 part 1

Jesus Preaches

And it came to pass, while in Jerusalem Jesus taught in the temple. He preached the gospel. And the Religious people watched Him, testing, questioning, hoping to trap Him. “By what authority do You say these things?” they asked Him. In Jesus’ style, He turned a question to them; “When John baptized people, did His authority come from God or was it only from other people?” They began to confer with each other, knowing that if they said heaven, Jesus would question them further. But if they said men, the people would stone them because the people believed John to be a prophet from God. Instead, they chose to be ignorant; “We don’t know”. And Jesus said unto them, “Then I will not tell you Who gave Me the authority to do these things”.

Jesus then shared a parable: ‘A man planted a vineyard. He leased the land to some farmers. Then he went away for a long time. When it was time for the grapes to be picked, the man sent a servant to the farmers so that they would give him his share of the grapes. But they beat the servant and sent him away with nothing. The man tried again two more times, sending a servant. But both were beaten terribly and thrown out. The vineyard owner decided to send his son whom he loved very much, hoping they would have more respect for His son. When the farmers saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the owner’s son who will own this vineyard. If we kill him, it will be ours. So the farmers killed the son. Then Jesus said What will the vineyard's owner do to these farmers? He will come and kill those farmers. Then he will lease the land to some other farmers.” When the people heard this story, they said, “God forbid that this should happen.” But Jesus looked into their eyes and said, “What does the scripture say: (He quotes Psalm 118:22) “The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner.” Jesus is telling them that He is the stone that is being rejected.

“Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” Quoted from Isaiah 8:13-15. Falling on that stone is repenting and receiving Jesus into our hearts. To reject Jesus refers to the stone falling on you. Total destruction. They knew that Jesus was talking about them. They were so angry that they sought that very hour to lay hands on Him and kill Him. But they were more afraid of what the people would do to them. So, they sent spies to watch Jesus even more closely.
