Luke
7 – Part 1
The Healing Power of Jesus
As
soon as Jesus finished with the sermon on the plain, He entered Capernaum, which
wasn’t far from there. A centurion sent a message with the elders to Jesus regarding
a well-loved servant of his, who was dying. A centurion is a captain over a
hundred men. He was of the Roman army who had heard about Jesus and trusted in
His healing power. The elders were Hebrew men from the synagogue. They were
friends with the centurion because he helped to build their synagogue and loved
the Hebrews. Jesus in His compassion, left immediately to go. But the centurion
sent another message; “Lord, trouble not Thyself: for I am not worthy that thou
shouldest enter my roof: I’m not even worthy to come to you. But just say The
Word and I know my servant will be healed. For in my own job, I have those
under my authority who obey my orders.” When Jesus heard this, He turned to the
crowd around Him and said, “I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no,
not in Israel.” And when the messengers returned to the house, they found that
the servant was healed.
The
next day Jesus and His disciples went to a city called Nain along with a crowd
of people who continued to follow Jesus. When they got to the city gate, there
was a dead man being carried out. He was the only son of a widowed mother. Jesus
felt her sorrow and had compassion for her. He went towards this funeral
procession and touched the bier (like a coffin without a lid) and the pallbearers stood still. Then Jesus said, “Young man, Arise!” touching the bier was a defilement according to Jewish
law. But Jesus has power over death. This moment was the first of three times
that Jesus raised someone from the dead.
The
young man sat up and began to speak and was taken to his mother. Everyone
present were in awe of the Power of Jesus. “A Great prophet has risen up among
us;” “God hath visited His people.”
Word
of Jesus continued to grow throughout all of Judea and throughout all the
region round about.
