Luke 15 part 2

The prodigal son

Jesus begins to share another parable. He is making a strong point of how joyous it is when sinners repent and come to Him. “And He said, A certain man had two sons” We all know the story of the prodigal son. He wanted his inheritance, and right now. That was never done. But the father gave him his wishes. The son went off and partied and did all kinds of things he shouldn’t do and wasted every bit of his money. At that time, a famine was in the land and he began to starve. So, he went and got a job feeding pigs. Which was the lowest of the lowest. He was so hungry that he was even jealous of the slop that was given to the pigs to eat. No one would help him. He finally realized how foolish he had been. He thought about how his father’s hired help was getting fed better than him right now. So, he decided to go home, tell his father he had sinned against God, and ask him if he would hire him to be a worker.

On the path home, his father saw him coming. He ran to him and hugged and kissed him. The son told him that he had sinned against God and had done wrong to his father and was no longer worthy to be called his son. But the father told the servants, ‘Hurry, bring the best clothes and put them on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring our best calf and kill it so that we can celebrate with plenty to eat. My son is dead, but now he is alive again! He was lost, but now he is found! So, they began to have a party

In the meantime, the dedicated older brother was irritated by this scene. Here he was being faithful and working every day for his father and his good-for-nothing brother shows up and the party begins. What’s up with that? He was so angry that he refused to go to the party. His father went to him to beg him to come. But he said to his father “Look, for all these years I have worked like a slave and been faithful to you. You have never thrown me a party. And then he comes home after wasting money and you kill the best calf for him!

His father said to him “Oh, my son, don’t you see,  you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But this is a day to celebrate and be happy. Your brother was dead, but now he is alive. He was lost, but now he is found.

Jesus used these parables to emphasize how important it is to Rejoice when lost souls are saved. It’s not about favoritism or being cheated out of something.. It’s about The Precious Love of Jesus!
 Rejoice!
