The Son of Man is Lord, Even of the Sabbath

Scripture For The Day

December 6, 2023- Luke 6: 1-13 Part 1

The Son of Man is Lord, Even of the Sabbath"

Jesus and the disciples were traveling and on a sabbath day, they went through some corn fields. Due to their hunger, the disciples began to pluck ears of corn, eating, and rubbing them in their hands. A Pharisee witnessed this and began to rebuke them “Why do you do that which is not lawful on the sabbath?” No law prohibited picking handfuls of grain from a neighbor's field to satisfy one’s immediate hunger. But this Pharisee was using this opportunity to attack Jesus and His followers by claiming unlawful practices due to it being the Sabbath. This was considered work and under the law, you weren’t to work on the Sabbath.

Jesus replied that he needed to not be so technical but understand The Word of God better. “have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those with him?” They ate consecrated bread.  Jesus said “The Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath” He is in control. The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Jesus continues to share other instances. The Pharisee couldn’t say much after that. On a whole other Sabbath, Jesus went to a synagogue and there was a man whose hand was withered. The Pharisees and scribes watched Jesus closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath so they could have legal grounds to accuse Him. But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise up and come here” Then Jesus turned to the people “I will ask you one thing; is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy it?” He slowly looked at all their faces, then turned to the man and said “Stretch forth your hand.” And his hand became restored. The Pharisees and scribes were filled with madness (anger and hatred) and they began to scheme and plot what to do with Jesus. This moment was glorious and miraculous but the hatred they had overpowered the beauty of that moment. Like my daughter said the other day “God has given us so much beauty but we, people, just junk it up.” And that’s what people seem to enjoy. Instead of finding joy in this moment. The “Religious” people chose anger and legalism. They missed out.

Soon after, Jesus went to a mountain to pray and continued praying all night in prayer to God The Father. It’s important that we also get away and pray and listen to The Father. Get away from the noise. Get away from the negativity, legalism, and ritualism. Focus on His Word. Focus on His Love. Focus on His Presence. Focus on a Relationship with Him. And shake off "Religion".
